It is a pleasure for us to invite you to the fourth basic course in interventional endosonography for lung diseases at the EUS and EBUS Training Centre at Gentofte University Hospital, Copenhagen.
Transesophageal (EUS) and endobronchial (EBUS) guided fine needle aspirations (FNA) have been proven to be safe and accurate methods for the diagnosis of tumors in the lungs and the mediastinum, including the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, where the combination of EUS and EBUS can serve as a complete “medical” mediastinoscopy. Unfortunately, the access to these methods is not yet widespread. Implementation and training is still a challenge for the chest physician.
The interpretation of the ultrasound images are difficult to learn and the procedures are difficult to master before they can be integrated into clinical practice. There is consequently, a huge need for dedicated courses and workshops with demonstrations under normal and pathological conditions as well as detailed demonstration of various procedures. Also ”tips and tricks” of imaging as well as FNA shown by experienced examiners and the indications and limitations of invasive techniques are important to learn.
This course will focus on EUS and EBUS as new methods in the evaluation of lung cancer and unknown mediastinal lesions. The clinical literature will be reviewed. The equipment and the techniques will be demonstrated. We want to focus on how to implement EUS and EBUS and discuss training aspects, thus making the participants able to set up the techniques in their own hospitals when returning home. In addition to this, the course will also address institutions that have already introduced the procedure but may lack standardized training.
The first courses were a tremendous success and we are also this time delighted to welcome one of the leading experts in EUS and EBUS, Professor Jouke Annema from Amsterdam. Furthermore we welcome Dr. Birgit Guldhammer Skov, senior pathologist at Bispebjerg University Hospital.
We look forward to seeing you in Denmark on the 1st and 2nd of October 2012.
